Nineteen Arkansas cities and counties receive Community Development Block Grants

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (December 5, 2011) - Governor Mike Beebe presented grants totaling $4.28 million to 19 Arkansas communities and counties at a ceremony held today at the State Capitol. The funds originate from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. 

The grants will be administered by the Arkansas Economic Development Commission's Grants Division.

To be eligible for CDBG funds, communities must have a population of less than 50,000 and a majority of households earning low to moderate income.

The 19 projects include the following cities:

  • Altheimer: Replacement of old sewer pumps - $101,882
  • Beebe: Street and drainage -$194,520
  • Clinton : Addition to community facility - $199,000
  • Concord: Construction of a childcare center - $400,000
  • Helena-West Helena: Addition for three classrooms - $218,894
  • McGehee: Renovation of the Japanese-American Relocation Museum - $219,000
  • Nashville: Additional water pump and wet well - $275,640
  • Oil Trough: Addition to New Life Children's Home - $157,690
  • Sedgwick: Drainage improvements - $202,566
  • Stamps: Construction of a senior center - $222,000
  • Stephens: Entrepreneurial Training Center - $217,000
  • Sulphur Springs: Rehabilitation of water and wastewater systems - $219,000
  • Wabbaseka: Construction of the youth entrepreneurial and technology complex - $217,000
  • Washington: Rehabilitation of two well houses - $99,485

And the following counties:

  • Chicot County: Construction of a county health unit - $360,000
  • Desha County: Installation of commercial kitchen - $136,062
  • Lonoke County: Building for Children's Advocacy Center - $205,560
  • Pope County: Construction of a senior center - $444,000
  • St. Francis County: Construction of a food pantry - $196,000
